Our Sustainability Strategy includes a commitment to purchase all electricity 'from zero carbon sources where this purchase leads to a real increase in investment into those sources' by 2026.
One of the most effective ways to support additional zero carbon energy generation in the UK is to sign a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) directly with the renewable energy developer. This benefits both the developer by providing a long-term guaranteed buyer of their energy, as well as ARU by providing zero-carbon power at a competitive guaranteed price.
PPAs are normally the preserve of energy buyers much larger than ARU, but by collaborating with 20 other universities we were able to sign a PPA with a developer of wind farms in Wales and Scotland. This provides 20% of our baseload electricity needs, reducing our total carbon emissions by approximately 10%.
