Professor Shahina Pardhan is the Director of the Vision and Eye Research Institute (VERI) based in our new School of Medicine. She was appointed as the first female professor of optometry in the UK (2001).

Shahina’s current research areas include diabetic retinopathy, low vision, ageing and visual short-term memory and anterior eye. An established scientist, she has published over 65 publications within the REF2021 period (2014-2020) with multi-disciplinary research teams in sports vision, psychology, public health, psychology, computer science and hearing research.

Shahina is an active member of the UK Women in Vision network, having given invited talks on ‘Women in Leadership’ in the UK and USA, and invited editorials on ‘Breaking the Glass Ceiling in Academia’, and has received a number of awards including Ophthalmologist’s Power List 2019 - Champion of Change, Asian Jewel Award and Asian Women of Achievement Award.
