Application tips

The Faculty of Science and Engineering offers research degrees covering a wide range of areas. We also offer our Professional Doctorate in Science and Engineering, allowing you to combine doctoral level research with your full-time career.

Research projects

We have a number of exciting research project opportunities that you may want to consider. These are self-funded research proposals that have already been identified by our staff.

If you already have a research proposal in mind

You are strongly advised to contact a potential supervisor in the appropriate school or research group before submitting a research degree proposal. Please see our staff pages for details of staff members’ areas of expertise and the topics they are willing to supervise.

All staff can be contacted by email and you are advised to discuss your proposed topic with your potential supervisor. Once the topic is agreed, you can begin the formal application process. You should name your prospective supervisor on your application form. All applications will be considered and, for those proposals that we have the expertise to supervise, applicants will be invited to an interview. Applications for part-time and distance study are also considered.

Research studentships

From time-to-time we offer funded research studentships. These are advertised on our jobs website as they become available.
