The Cardiology Research Unit is a collaboration with the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre (ECTC) at Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Essex.
The combined expertise makes the setting up and running of cardiovascular (heart and lung) and thoracic (chest) clinical trials more efficient and effective, benefiting clinicians and researchers as well as present and future patients. ECTC provides tertiary cardiac services for a population of approximately 1.7 million people.
Research projects are wide ranging and include non-interventional (electrophysiology and imaging) and interventional cardiology. The joint research unit has particular expertise in trialling cardiology medical devices.
The ECTC has some of the country’s most modern cardiothoracic treatment facilities. Clinicians are involved in research programmes across anaesthetics, cardiac physiology, cardiac and thoracic surgery, interventional cardiology and perfusion.
