Dasha Kudriasheva, who is studying Business with Marketing, talks about how an amazing placement experience boosted her confidence for her final year at ARU.
When I started my Business with Marketing degree as an international student at Anglia Ruskin University, I hoped for a well-rounded experience combining academic with real-world learning. Initially, I wasn’t enrolled in a course with a placement year, but after exploring options, I decided to transition into a sandwich year. ARU made this transition incredibly smooth and easy, making it possible for me to add a full year of hands-on experience to my degree. Reflecting on my journey, I can honestly say that this decision – and the support I received – has been one of the best parts of my time at ARU.
The decision to switch to a sandwich course came after a conversation with ARU’s employability team, who explained the benefits of adding a placement year. While I was initially hesitant, the team reassured me that the process would be straightforward and that they’d be there to support me every step of the way.
The employability team went above and beyond to prepare me for securing a placement opportunity. They didn’t just offer general advice; they provided tailored support, helping me with everything from updating my CV to practicing interview skills. My placement advisor played a crucial role in this process, offering insights into industry expectations and giving me the encouragement I needed to apply with confidence.
When I finally received my placement offer, it felt incredibly rewarding. The guidance from my placement advisor, paired with my hard work, came together in a moment that reinforced my choice to switch to a placement year.
During my placement, I found myself applying business concepts I’d learned in class to real-world situations. I gained hands-on experience in project management, teamwork, and problem-solving, and I saw how these skills function in a business environment. Beyond technical skills, I learned how to adapt and stay proactive in a fast-paced setting, which has been invaluable.
The placement also allowed me to connect with industry professionals and gain insights into the career path I want to pursue after graduation. Working alongside experienced professionals helped me develop new perspectives and a clearer vision of what I want in my future career.
Now, as I begin my third and final year at ARU, I feel a renewed sense of confidence and purpose. My placement experience has given me not only practical skills but also the belief that I can succeed in a professional setting. I no longer see my final year as a hurdle; instead, it’s an opportunity to apply what I’ve learned and refine the skills I’ve already developed.
Reflecting on this journey, my placement experience has not only prepared me for my final year but also for the professional world that awaits me.
For any student considering a placement, my advice is to take the leap. The experience will add immense value to your education.
