This hands-on, learning-by-doing activity is part of our updated pedagogic, where building at 1:1 scale, students appreciate the role of construction as the platform to connect the poetics of their concepts with the poetic aspect of the actual, tangible artefact. A real-life scenario interjects in the process, with a client, a competition amongst ideas, a physical context, collaboration with tutors from other disciplines and industrial partners.
Conventional and analogue drawing, and model-making techniques are practised alongside familiarisation with digital design and fabrication techniques. As well as the interconnection of software and hardware morphological design and manufacturing. These are demonstrated into the design and construction of a pavilion for every year’s summer exhibition. The staff and students work closely with the building industry.
