Oscar is a biotechnology engineer by training, holding a BSc and MEng in Sustainable biotechnology from Aalborg University, Copenhagen. In his final year of Masters he took a sharp turn towards the social side of the circular economy and renewable energy technologies. He has written about the relationship between Buddhism and circular economy decision making, living and working in the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan for a semester. In partnership with Munich-based renewable energy consoling firm WIP Renewables, Oscar worked with a global research consortium in the Horizon 2020 project, DiBiCoo, looking at the diffusion of renewable energy technology from the EU to Argentina, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Ghana and South Africa. After his Masters, Oscar started a sustainability consulting startup, Future Shift, where he was creative director until 2023.
In his postgraduate research, Oscar looks at the circular economy as a future-oriented framework to improve the human relationship with the earth system. His research centres around circular economy practitioners (eg engineers, designers) and how they envision the future’s circular economy. He uses interviews, workshops and visioning practices to understand the circular economy at the level of the practitioner, and how revolutionary imaginaries of the future exist, are challenged and form the basis for more circular futures to unfold.
