As the Deputy Head of Department and Course leader Jan believes it is her role to motivate the team in Peterborough to deliver excellent learning and teaching. The inter-professional team approach undertaken at Guild House allows the team to monitoring the students’ progress throughout their course in whatever field they are studying; the student are known by name and the staff are clearly visible and accessible for support.
Professionally networking is essential, this is undertaken outside the university as an external examiners for Coventry University on their pre-registration nursing course and being offered a one year extension on the role to assist in their transition to the all graduate curriculum.
Within the university Jan has a professional duty to remain up to date and clinically credible, therefore she links with our Practice placement providers as part of the Acute Care link team for Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals NHS trust. Specific areas responsible for are: SRHG, MIU, OPD, Theatre, Greenwood DSU and the John Van Geest. In practice her team support students and their placement mentors to ascertain their developing clinical competence. These relationships allow them to be visible to the student and the practice providers demonstrating a partnership approach to their course.
As a member of the academic team Jan participates in the interview, selection and retention of students to the course. This involves open days/evenings, school taster days as well as the interview process. The reason or the success in these areas is commitment and good team working.
