Hugh is a specialist in database design and related technologies with particular interests in networking and big data and a passion for computer security, while developing his interests in computer hardware.
He takes a keen interest in widening students' learning experiences. He considers himself a lifelong learner and is always looking for ways in which he can develop.
Hugh served for 22 years in the Royal Air Force, with postings around the UK and Cyprus in roles such as tactical communications, maintaining HF transmitters, satellite communications, systems control, lecturing at No1 Radio School, software development, and database maintenance and development.
After leaving the RAF, he was a software developer for 15 years before moving back into lecturing.
Hugh has more than 30 years' practical experience of networking, electronics and software engineering in a diverse range of environments.
He is also an experienced educator, teaching at HE across different disciplines in FE on Access to HE, apprentices and BTEC. He has a passion for music, playing the guitar and melodeon, and also likes to tinker with his three-wheeled Lomax 223 car.
