Dr Fred Sherratt

Reader in Construction Management

Faculty:Faculty of Science and Engineering

School:Engineering and the Built Environment

Location: Chelmsford

Areas of Expertise: Built environment

After more than ten years working in the construction industry for a large contractor, most recently as a construction manager, Fred moved to academia. She teaches many aspects of construction management, including planning and programming, resource management, management theory and practice, and health and safety management.

Background

Fred began working in construction as a temporary site secretary, and enjoyed it so much she decided to stay. Progressing through the roles of document control, assistant planner, project planner and finally construction section manager, Fred has considerable experience of site-based work as well as feasibility studies, tendering processes and pre-construction activities. She's able to share this knowledge through her lectures, using examples from her time on site to bring the theory to life.

While working as a section manager, Fred was sponsored to carry out a PhD in construction site safety. Her position as an emic researcher, having to deal with safety management on a daily basis, brought insight to the process. However, Fred also became more interested in the methodologies used for such research, specifically challenging the positivistic way of ‘measuring people’ which simply didn’t agree with her lived experiences. As a result, her research is grounded in social constructionism, adopting a relativistic approach in her work. Fred remains an active researcher, with a desire to produce understandings and insights that are actually useful in practice, aiming to help create a construction industry that ensures the people she used to work alongside are as safe and healthy as possible. More recently, Fred has become interested in the impacts of Construction 4.0 on the workforce, and how the digitisation of construction will affect worker skills and identity, production processes and construction management in practice
