Professor Malata’s focus is on breast reconstruction after mastectomy for cancer, using the patient’s own tissues or implants with special interest in microvascular surgery. He also specialises in revision cosmetic breast implant surgery and gynaecomastia correction.

Background

After graduating from the University of Zambia Medical School, Professor Malata underwent general surgical training on the Newcastle & Leeds University Hospital Rotations. He was then a Research Registrar at Bradford University Plastic Surgery Research Unit (1991-4). His clinical training in plastic surgery took place in Leeds, Newcastle and Canniesburn (Glasgow). He then took up substantive superspecialty fellowships in breast and cosmetic surgery in the USA at Georgetown (Washington DC) and Emory University Hospitals in Atlanta (1998-9).

As well as being a member of the team at the School of Medicine, Professor Malata is Consultant Plastic Surgeon in the Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and Cambridge Breast Unit, at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.

Professor Malata has a long-standing interest in surgical research. Following three years in a research laboratory he has pursued an active academic and clinical research interest with more than 200 publications, including 28 invited book chapters and review articles and over 125 peer-reviewed PubMed [CM1] papers. He was President of the European Society for Surgical Research (ESSR) from 2011-2013 having joined the ESSR in 1996, becoming a Board Member in 2006 and serving as Secretary General between 2009-2011. He is Associate Editor for Reconstructive and Plastic Surgery (Frontiers of Surgery), an editorial board member of European Surgical Research and a reviewer for multiple journals. He supervises research projects for PhD students, residents and medical students. He currently has 110 international and 120 national scientific presentations in addition to over 40 invited lectures.
