My name’s Will and I work in the IT Services Department, providing general IT support out and about around Guild House in Peterborough. This might be providing classroom support, helping with a PC problem or anything else IT related.
Another part of what I do is the administrative side of customer support which includes progressing IT purchases for faculties and professional services.
One of the things I love most about my job is helping people to work and learn. When I’m called to help I will always try to teach the member of staff or student to understand the IT solution, so that they can grow in confidence and can fix it themselves next time.
I like troubleshooting and working alongside staff and students with their IT requests to make sure we provide the best service possible.
I think my role of assisting students showing them how to use the lecterns in classrooms so that they can practise their presentations and help to build their technological skills is really important. Part of what I do is to help connect our students, services and facilities, which we do through Get IT Sorted. This gives them the skills to get started successfully with their studies.
One of the things I have been most proud of whilst working at ARU has been the part I played in the desktop refresh project, which updated all student-facing PCs and most of the staff PCs. This made the IT working environment much better for both staff and students and really improved the technology. After the upgrade the students loved the refresh, and it was so good to see all these new PCs being used so enthusiastically by our students.
If I could give anyone some advice it would be to back up your files before it’s too late. You don’t want to lose precious documents!
