Joining a society or sports club is something that every new student at ARU should look into. Joining these communities is a great way to make friends at uni and, though it sounds clichéd, 'grow as a person'.
I can personally vouch for that. I am involved in two societies and clubs: American Football and the History Society. I have made many friends with both of these groups that I consider some of my best friends.
When I joined American Football in my first year, I had no idea that I would one day be the President of the team. I went from being a shy fresher in the team to quickly finding myself with 30+ friends. This is my personal experience from one sport, but I know many people that are involved with other societies and clubs that would agree you will find a similar welcoming environment in any society/club you are interested in.
ARU has societies to fit nearly any interest, from the African Society to the Wildlife Society (sadly none starting with Z!). But if you cannot find the society that you are interested in (maybe one starting with Z?), you can easily get support from the Students’ Union. You can see the full list on the Students’ Union website.
So make sure you go to the Freshers' Fair during your first few weeks, where you’ll get some free stuff and choose the society or sports club that’s right for you.
