Student meals have something of a bad reputation. Unfairly so, we think. Here are six recipes using six essentials that dispel the notion that all student meals are awful.
Baked beans
The humble baked bean might be the butt of many a student food joke, but here it’s the hero ingredient in a sumptuous sausage casserole. Mushrooms, onions and a splash of Worcestershire sauce make for a homely, hassle-free dinner.

Pasta
No student house is complete without a half-empty packet of pasta in the cupboard. Time to put it to use and impress friends with this simple, fresh, Italian-American favourite. Caprese pasta consists of only four ingredients: pasta (obviously), mozzarella, tomatoes and fresh basil, with a little seasoning to taste. Bellissimo!

Eggs
How do you like your eggs in the morning? We like ours poached in pan of chopped tomatoes, with a dash of salt and pepper, some garlic, chili and – when we’re feeling fancy – a little parmesan. Eggs in Purgatory is a protein-packed sizzler that only takes five minutes.

Cereal
We’re talking good, old-fashioned oats rather than sugary, overpriced cereal. Oats are a complex carbohydrate, releasing energy slowly throughout the day, making them a brilliant base for these soft and chewy granola bars. Super simple, super convenient, super delicious.

Noodles
Ahh, noodles. Inexpensive, easy to prepare and adaptable. What’s not to love? When it comes to student dining, a simple stir fry is standard procedure. Just add chicken, peppers, mangetout and a splash of soy sauce and we’re good to go!

Tortillas
Tortillas are a healthier, more versatile and longer-lasting alternative to bread. But the best bit? They are the ingredient that literally holds together one of Mexico’s best-loved exports: the mighty burrito. Try this veggie recipe and turn the heat up by going heavy on the jalapeños.
