Six reasons to love Chelmsford

Festivals, green spaces, county cricket, sublime eats and drinks... and a certain TV show. Six reasons why The Only Way is Chelmsford.

Festival season

For years Chelmsford was host to V Festival, welcoming huge acts like Rihanna, Kings of Leon, Kasabian – even the Beibs. Sadly, V Fest is no more, but fear not. It’s been more than adequately replaced by a range of festivals and concerts, big and small, happening at venues across the city.

Nature

When Hylands Park isn’t busy hosting some of the UK’s best loved festivals, it’s busy being beautiful. With neoclassical villa Hylands House as its centrepiece, the 574 acres of rolling greenery is a serene setting in the spring and summer months, while the RHS Garden boasts an eclectic range of horticulture to peruse throughout the year.

Eating and drinking

Whether it’s the sophisticated and beautifully plated fine dining on offer at local favourite Russell’s, or a humble high street sausage roll you’re after, Chelmsford’s got you covered. And did we mention Chelmsford Beer & Cider Festivals? Hosted by the Campaign for Real Ale, they're a (responsible) celebration of the good stuff.

Sport

As well as Anglia Ruskin’s plethora of sports teams and societies, Chelmsford is home to Essex County Cricket Club; one of only 18 first-class clubs in the country. Don’t know your fast bowl from your off spin? Not a problem. Chelmsford Rugby Club can be found scrumming in Coronation Park every other week during the season, while the city even has its own marathon!

*That* TV show

Okay, so The Only Way is Essex might not be everyone’s idea of highbrow entertainment, but for those that aren’t averse to a little fake tan and drink-throwing dramatics, Brentwood is just a short drive away. There, where the majority of the ITV show is filmed, you can visit Amy Childs’ boutique, Gemma Collins’ salon or even spend the night clubbing in the iconic Sugar Hut.

The best of both worlds

While Chelmsford is only a 35-minute train ride away from London, it’s also a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the big city. With its rich green spaces and picturesque countryside, it’s somewhere students and non-students alike can unwind at stressful times, while being close enough to the capital to enjoy all it has to offer with ease. It really is the best of both worlds.
