Sarah Barrett is Placements Administrator at Lord Ashcroft International Business School (LAIBS).

It has been a while since my last post – partly because I have been so busy! But that is no excuse of course. What have I been busy doing? The undergraduate research assistant work experience placements have now started, so I occasionally see an undergraduate student in the academic office, which isn’t such a regular sight! We are delighted to have welcomed six students for this opportunity, and will be running a similar initiative over the summer – so do look out for that!

Soon I will take my second trip to the Chelmsford campus. I hope to go on a walk around the campus grounds, particularly if the weather stays like it has been over the last couple of days. If you are based in Cambridge and have not visited Chelmsford, I recommend going – particularly if there is an event with transport. The campus is really open and there is even a mill pond that I think won an award for wildlife conservation, but don’t quote me on that. It is very nice anyway! I will be going there on a coach with the LAIBS students booked onto the Global Brand Leaders and Entrepreneurs event, to be followed by the first stage of the LAIBS intern training.

The LAIBS Intern Programme is now up and running! We received over 100 applications for the programme across Cambridge and Chelmsford, which was an amazing response! The deadline for applications was 21 February, which was quickly followed by telephone interviews taking place over the following week, and the final stage of the process, face-to-face interviews, which took place week commencing 3 March.

We kicked off the programme with a ‘speed networking’ launch event, where the interns got to meet their business mentors. The atmosphere was amazing and the speed networking was a great success! The room was adorned with decorations which featured red stars, inspired by the distinctive LAIBS Intern Programme logo.

There was a lot of hard work that went into organising the programme, from reviewing the applications to the hours spent interviewing and deliberating over who to accept. It was tough to decide as the standard of applicants was so high. The highlight was telling the lucky interns who had got a place – some of the positive responses from new interns made all the hard work seem very worth it!

The programme will be running each year, and is something that will look fantastic on any student’s CV as well as being a really valuable experience. The standard of the programme is impressive. The training is run by external professional business trainers and the business mentors we have enlisted come from companies such as Worldpay, Barclays and KPMG! If you are interested and in your 1st or 2nd year please do look out for the next round. We will be inviting applications this autumn.
