Background on the Newton Fund can be found in the UK HE International Unit's information note to the sector, and on the UK Government’s Newton Fund website. This post provides an update on Newton Fund opportunities and activity.

The joint Research Council's UK-CONFAP research partnerships call opened on 4 August. The application form and guidance for applicants will be available from 18 August 2014 on the Research Councils UK website. The deadline for applications is 17 October 2014 at 4pm UK time.

The International Unit represented the UK HE sector in discussions with senior officials from the Indian Department for Science and Technology on their visit to the UK last week.

The first Newton-Bhabha call, by the MRC and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, for UK-India Joint Centre Partnerships has just opened. The invitation for proposals is available on the Medical Research Council website. The deadline is 29 September 2014 at 4pm UK time.

Across many Newton Fund countries
A number of Researcher Links opportunities (travel grants and workshops) will be coming on stream over the next three months. A call for travel grants will be launched next week (week commencing 11 August), with a submission deadline at the end of September.

In some Newton Fund partner countries, Researcher Links travel grants can be for visits of up to six months. In most countries, the focus will be on early career researchers; in some countries it can also be more senior researchers. A pilot call for Institutional Links grants will be published in late September.

All information will be accessible through the British Council website as well as through the International Unit website.

Further calls for specific countries, such as China and Kazakhstan, and for programmes run by delivery partners such as the Academies across many countries are expected in the next few months.

Given the complexity of the Newton Fund, calls may emerge with less advance notice and shorter time frames than would be ideal. The International Unit will continue to do all it can to make sure that institutions know as much as possible, as soon as possible, about the likely opportunities on offer. All calls will be on the International Unit's website, in its newsletter International Focus and on the UK Government’s Newton Fund website.

More information, including views from experts in higher education institutions and UK delivery partners, will be in the forthcoming Newton-themed edition of International Focus.
