Dominique shares her advice to help you prepare to make the most of your post-university journey.
Graduating from ARU is an exciting milestone, but my journey definitely didn’t end when I received my diploma. Becoming a successful ARU alumnus requires strategic planning and a proactive approach. Here’s what helped me and can help you prepare to make the most of your post-university journey:
Your network at ARU is one of your most valuable assets. Engage with professors, classmates, and industry professionals through networking events, seminars, and online forums. Establishing meaningful connections before you graduate will open doors for future career opportunities. I had a great relationship with all my professors and tutors, and when I graduated, I knew I could rely on them for references, and they regularly sent us job opportunities or networks we could join for support. My cohort has supported each other in interviewing and finding jobs as well.
ARU offers extensive career support, including job placement assistance, CV workshops, and interview preparation. Utilise these services while you’re still a student to gain an edge in the job market. You can also reach out to the Employability Service as an alumnus for continued support. This service was essential when I was looking for work in the few months after I graduated. I took the time to go in person and meet with career services, and they were able to look at my CV and help me apply for jobs.
Staying connected with ARU through its alumni network provides numerous benefits, from mentorship opportunities to exclusive job postings. Engage with the ARU alumni community through LinkedIn groups, social media, and in-person networking events. When I graduated, I was invited to join the ARU - Creative Alumni Network on LinkedIn, which is a great community for me to connect with others in my field and receive updates on opportunities.
In today’s digital world, your online presence matters. Update your LinkedIn profile with your achievements, skills, and career aspirations. Join professional groups related to your field and actively engage in discussions to enhance your professional reputation. I made a point to update my LinkedIn with all my placement, volunteer, and work experience. I changed my badge to ‘Open to Work’ and followed other music therapists, creative therapists, and allied health professionals in my field to strengthen my connections. I also started an online network that I created through my association for music therapy.
Graduation doesn’t mean the end of learning. Keep up with industry trends by attending workshops, enrolling in additional courses, and earning professional certifications. ARU offers lifelong learning opportunities that can help you stay competitive in your field. I signed up for a two-year mentoring programme so I could keep up with my certification and continue my learning in the first few years after graduation to strengthen my knowledge.
Successful alumni often find ways to give back to their alma mater. Whether through mentorship, guest lectures, or donations, staying involved with ARU can strengthen your network and enhance your professional credibility. I’ve continued to work as an Alumni Ambassador for ARU’s International Office so I can share my experiences since graduating, inspire future graduates, and offer my opinions and advice. This is meaningful work for me to help ARU after I felt I got so much out of my experience.
ARU hosts various alumni events, networking sessions, and industry panels. Participating in these activities will keep you connected to the university and allow you to continue expanding your professional network. I know I can always check out the ARU alumni page for events and ways to get involved further.
My time at Anglia Ruskin University laid the foundation for my future success, and it was up to me to build upon it. By networking, utilising career resources, staying engaged with the ARU community, and continuously learning, I maximised my potential as a successful ARU alumnus. Start preparing now, and set yourself up for a thriving post-university journey!
