Susan is a professor in trauma research who has a particular interest in identifying resilience-related factors pertaining to psychosocial adjustment and growth post-trauma at individual, community and organisational levels.
Susan played a pivotal role in establishing and providing a unique self-help service in the UK for survivors of sudden trauma, their families, and professional and voluntary personnel.
Susan graduated from the University of Aberdeen with an MA (Hons) degree in psychology and a PhD from the Faculty of Medicine. Her academic research career spans more than 20 years and includes projects of national and international significance. In 2006, The Federal Relief Commission (Pakistan Government) appointed her as a research advisor to their Mental Health and Psychosocial Relief Work Programme for victims of the 2005 Pakistan Kashmir earthquake. She contributed to the 2009 Department of Health/NATO evidence-informed guidance for the psychosocial response to major incidents (including terrorist events) and the Scottish Government 2013 Guidance on “Preparing for Emergencies: Planning for the Psychosocial and Mental Health Needs of People Affected by Emergencies”.
Since 2009, Susan has fulfilled a senior academic role at Robert Gordon University (RGU). As a Principal Member of the Institute for Health & Wellbeing Research she led research themes around psychosocial and mental health, environmental and occupational health, and remote healthcare. She was responsible for developing and implementing a research strategy to support evidence-based practice associated with enhancing lifelong mental health and wellbeing.
In 2011, Susan became the Director of the Aberdeen Centre for Trauma Research (ACTR). In 2012, she was promoted to Professor of Trauma Research (Faculty of Health & Social Care, RGU). She joined Anglia Ruskin University in February 2017 as a part-time Professor of Health and Social Care, with a specific remit to act as a strategic research advisor to our Veterans & Families Institute for Military Social Research.
Susan has a broad research interest in health and wellbeing, with a particular emphasis on psychosocial aspects relating to trauma within the clinical, educational and occupational domains. Her extensive international experience in the design and methodology of psychosocial trauma-related projects includes the evaluation of the impact of critical incidents on the mental health and wellbeing of military and emergency personnel, healthcare staff, and offshore workers.
Currently, Susan's teaching responsibilities focus predominantly on research (eg, DProfHSC summer workshop on mixed methods research) and research degree student supervision. She has taught communication skills training, research methods and trauma awareness management across a range of undergraduate, postgraduate and CPD courses in the UK and abroad. She was previously a Board member of the Doctorate in Professional Practice at Robert Gordon University.
