Dr Hawkins qualified from St George's Hospital Medical School in 1990, after which he trained in general and respiratory medicine in London. Specialist training included posts at St George's and The Royal Brompton.


A three-year research fellowship at King's College Hospital led to the award of Dr Hawkins' PhD.

A Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Royal Society of Medicine, he is also a member of the British Thoracic Society, previously serving on their Professional Standards Committee. Dr Hawkins is a member of the European Respiratory Society and the American College of Chest Physicians.
