Background

Prior to joining Anglia Ruskin University Helen was Head of Education at Moorfields Eye Hospital where she designed and implemented an MSc in Ophthalmic Practice with University College London. In this Role she also implemented a very successful education program for internal nurses, a New to Ophthalmology induction programme and helped design and implement training in several advanced ophthalmic practice initiatives for nurses.

Helen was also part of a multidisciplinary team involved in the building a designated ophthalmic unit at Korle Bu Hospital in Ghana, West Africa. Helen scoped the educational needs of ophthalmic post registered nurses within the new unit and assisted in the training needs of these nurses.

In her last Clinical role Helen was a Nurse Practitioner in Ophthalmology at Hinchingbrooke Hospital whereby she was the first nurse in the UK to perform both Nd YAG Laser Capsulotomies and Peripheral iridotomies and this led her to be asked to present at conferences locally, Nationally and internationally.

Helens MSc research looked at the education of nurses running ophthalmic nurse led emergency clinics and compared the conditions that nurses were allowed to treat independently.

Helen has always had a passion for teaching and learning and has always enjoyed teaching nurses in practice so moving into full time academia was a natural progression to her career.
