Gavin is particularly interested in social work education and mental health social work with a focus for rights, equity, equality, diversity and inclusion.
Gavin began his social work career as a local authority Forensic (Mental Health) Social Worker with experiences in both community and secure-hospital settings before gaining further experiences within Early Intervention Services (Psychosis), Child Protection and Discharge Planning. Gavin first joined ARU in 2009 on a part-time basis, and worked in both practice and academia before becoming a full-time academic in 2019.
Gavin's research focus is with the application of a novel metatheoretical framework (the Blended Theory Model). Initially researched via a Participatory Action Research project, the framework was assessed to promote knowledge, skills and abilities with the mapping, synthesizing and application of multiple theories across social work practice and education.
Gavin is a doctoral supervisor and welcomes requests for further information regarding doctoral study.
Gavin teaches across both the undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Social Work.
