Akash is a senior lecturer, teaching on optometry and ophthalmic dispensing courses, and carrying out research related to binocular vision. He is also a practicing optometrist.



After graduating from Anglia Ruskin University with a degree in Optometry, Akash worked as an optometrist in various parts of London. Returning to ARU to commence a PhD on suppression in the binocular vision condition known as amblyopia led him to further postdoctoral research within the Anglia Vision Research group. Currently he holds the post of senior lecturer in the Department of Vision and Hearing Sciences, and also continues to work in practice as a locum optometrist.

The brain combines the input from both eyes to give better visual performance than each eye individually. This advantage of two eyes over one is present in those with normal binocular vision. Amblyopia is a neurological eye condition where this advantage is lost. Here, vision in usually one eye is still deficient despite use of optimum spectacle lens power. Perception in the affected eye is worse than the non-amblyopic eye due to neural suppression. Measuring this suppression with different types of simple and complex visual stimuli can give us an idea of the extent of amblyopic deficit in different areas of the visual cortex.
