Biography

Dr Nigel Hunt has at various times been General Practitioner, tutor, author, Chairman of the Essex Faculty Board of the Royal College of General Practitioners, and Consultant Physician to 'E' Company of the Royal Anglian Regiment (TA). He studied Medicine at Liverpool University Medical School and later served as House Physician and Surgeon at the Royal Liverpool Hospital. He went on to practise as Senior House Officer in Adult Psychiatry, Paediatrics, Neonatal Paediatrics, Medicine for the Elderly, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Accident and Emergency Medicine, before moving into General Practice. Nigel has also worked in a number of administrative roles and also served as Secretary to Chelmsford Medical Society. He has a special interest in healthcare education and has long been devoted to the professional development of all manner of healthcare practitioners. Nigel has been instrumental in the development of the programmes for primary healthcare workers now on offer at Anglia Ruskin.

In 2000 Dr Nigel Hunt was made Honorary Fellow of the University.

"The Senate of Anglia Polytechnic University has great pleasure in recommending the award of an Honorary Fellowship of the University to Dr Nigel Guy Hunt, General Practitioner, Rivermead Gate Medical Centre.

This award is made in recognition of his enthusiastic work as physician at the University Health Centre, attending, advising and mentoring many APU students, consulting in Continuing Professional Development for primary healthcare workers, especially in the creation of programmes for professional development among local GPs and Dental Surgeons and as a friend and supporter of this University.

Following his secondary education at Great Baddow School in Chelmsford, Nigel went on to study medicine at Liverpool University Medical School, afterwhich he served as House Physician and Surgeon at the Royal Liverpool Hospital and subsequently he broadened his experience in various hospitals as a Senior House Officer in Psychiatry, Paediatrics, Paediatrics, Medicine for the Elderly, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Accident and Emergency Medicine, before becoming full- time Principal in his current general practice.

He has also been appointed as Medical Advisor to Maldon District Council and Consultant Physician to various bodies, including: 'E' Company of the Royal Anglian Regiment (TA) in Chelmsford and the North Essex Family Planning Clinics. However, Nigel's ardent enthusiasm for academic teaching is well illustrated by his numerous activities as, for example, GP Tutor in Mid-Essex, Organizer of Practice Nurse study days for Essex Faculty of the Royal College of General Practice, Tutor to final year medical students at the Royal Free and the Royal London Hospital Medical Schools, Joint Chairman/Course Leader and Tutor for the MSc in General Practice at APU where he is also a Visiting Fellow, Key Group Member on the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME Working Group and Associate Dean for Thames Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education, University of London, in conjunction with the post of Deputy Clinical Lead at EQUIP.

Nigel is associated, also, with a range of administrative roles connected with medicine, education and personal development throughout the region, such as Secretary to Chelmsford Medical Society, Editor of the GPEE's Education Journal and has served at different times as Member, Secretary and Chairman of the Essex Faculty Board of the Royal College of General Practitioners, is on the Board of Management and Universities Academic Link for EQUIP and Clinical Assessor to the Region and the Ombudsman, besides being a governor at two local schools.

Dr Nigel Hunt is a man of great learning and wide experience, with a regional reputation across the whole range of the health services infrastructure, where he plays a most significant role as an advocate for Anglia Polytechnic University. He has a heart for the professional development of those engaged in healthcare and through this aspiration, he has been instrumental in the involvement of teaching staff of the university in new programmes of learning for local primary healthcare workers.

It is for these reasons, therefore, that I invite you, Vice-Chancellor, to confer on Dr Nigel Guy Hunt, an Honorary Fellowship of this University."
