Jenni Middleton is editor of Nursing Times, the voice of the nursing community, and the UK’s leading source of nursing news and best practice.
Jenni grew up in Cambridgeshire. A straight-A student at Hills Road Sixth Form College, she left East Anglia to study English and American Literature at the University of Warwick. And after graduating, took up her first journalism role at Geo-Information International.
She quickly progressed from a junior role to assistant editor, before making a move to American publisher Ziff Davis.
Her first role as lead editor came in 1997 with DMG Business Media. In 2001, she moved to publishing giant Emap, taking editorial charge at a number of their retail titles. Then in 2010, by now a seasoned and highly respected senior editor, Jenni moved to Nursing Times to lead the prestigious publication into the digital age.
Nursing Times publishes news, opinion, learning resources, and a host of double-blind-peer-reviewed clinical articles. It hosts forums, and manages many high-profile events, including The Nursing Times Awards, The Student Nursing Times Awards, and the Patient Safety Awards, which is run jointly with sister title Health Service Journal.
Since joining the title, Jenni has launched student-nursing-times dot net, an online subscription package for student nurses. She has steered Nursing Times to three Online Media Awards, two British Media Awards, a Professional Publishers’ Association New Talent Award, the PPA Great Leap Forward Award, an Association of Online Publishers Award for Digital Audience Engagement, and two British Society of Magazine Editors' Awards.
In 2015, Jenni was named Editor of the Year at the Medical Journalists’ Association awards, in recognition of her “impressive record in transforming the fortunes of the publication and its brand, as well as providing lively, thought-provoking, and relevant content for the readership”.
Earlier this year, she was named Editor of the Year at the Professional Publishers’ Association Awards, in recognition of her “outstanding talent as a leader” and for enhancing audience engagement.
Campaigning to improve the recognition and rights of nurses is a core part of Nursing Times's heritage, and this has continued under Jenni's editorship. The magazine has run the successful A Seat on the Board campaign to win places for nurses on clinical commissioning boards, and the publication is currently leading the Speak Out Safely campaign to ensure all healthcare organisations listen to their staff when they raise genuine patient safety concerns.
Anglia Ruskin University already enjoys a close relationship with Jenni. We were one of the first universities to join up to the Speak out Safely campaign, and we have been well-represented at the Student Nursing Times awards.
An innovative, forward-thinking professional, Jenni has been a welcome guest at our Cambridge campus, and she was very supportive of our Stop the Pressure student-led conference.
