Biography

Professor Ian Blackshaw is an eminent lawyer, prolific author, board member of the Anglia Ruskin International Law Unit and a celebrated Anglia Ruskin alumnus.

Ian first entered private practice as a solicitor in 1967 with Haslam and Co and in the early part of his career focused on a number of specialisms, including international business law, European company law and intellectual property law. His career progressed quickly and in 1972 he was appointed Northern European Area Counsel for The Coca-Cola Export Corporation. In 1974, Ian travelled to Madrid to take up the first of a number of overseas roles and over the next few years he worked for several international corporations, as well as carrying out legal work for the British Embassy, the British Council and the British Chamber of Commerce in Spain.

In 1990, Ian was appointed Vice President Legal Affairs Worldwide, for the ISL Sports Marketing Group, based in Switzerland. In subsequent years, Ian has become a leading authority in the field of sports law, working with many high-profile organisations, including FIFA, UEFA and the International Olympic Committee. He is a prolific author of articles for several law journals, including the Entertainment and Sports Law Journal and the World Sports Law Report, and he has written several books on sports law, many of which are part of the Asser International Sports Law Series. His latest Book is on 'Sports Marketing Agreements: Legal Fiscal and Practical Aspects' and he is also completing a new Book on 'Sports Branding Law' which is due to be published in 2015. He is Consulting Editor of 'Global Sports Law and Taxation Reports'.

He is also a Member of the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland, and also of the Arbitration and Mediation Center of the World Intellectual Property Organization in Geneva, Switzerland.

Ian is a Member of Anglia Ruskin's International Law Unit and regularly provides our LLM International Business Law students with an intensive programme of training in Alternative Commercial Dispute Resolution.

Ian is an Honorary Fellow of the International Sports Law Centre at the TMC Asser Institute in The Hague. He is a Member of the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland, and has also served as a Member of the Arbitration and Mediation Panels of the UK Sports Dispute Resolution Panel. He is also a Member of the World Intellectual Property Organization Arbitration and Mediation Center in Geneva, Switzerland, where he adjudicates on Domain Name and Expert Determination Panels.

He is a prolific author of articles for several law journals, including the Entertainment and Sports Law Journal and the World Sports Law Report, and he has written several books on sports law, many of which are part of the Asser International Sports Law Series. Ian is also contributing editor of The International Sports Law Journal and consulting editor of Global Sports Law and Taxation Reports.

Ian regularly chairs and speaks at international sports and intellectual property law conferences throughout the world. He is a contributor to the New Oxford Companion to Law on sports law, and also contributes to The Times and the BBC World Service on topical sports and intellectual property law issues.

Ian holds a number of visiting professorships in the UK, Continental Europe and South Africa. He has also acted as an international consultant on the Commercial and Intellectual Property Aspects of Sport and Sports Dispute Resolution Modules of the Sports Law and Practice LLM programme of De Montfort University. He is also a Member of the Centre for International Sports Law of Staffordshire University, where he delivered their Inaugural Lecture on 'Should Sport be above the Law?'

Since graduating from Anglia Ruskin with a Master's Degree in International Sports Law in 2001, he has maintained strong links with us as a Member of Anglia Ruskin's International Law Unit and regularly provides our LLM International Business Law students with an intensive programme of training in Alternative Commercial Dispute Resolution.

As an internationally renowned leader in his field, he is a fine role model for Anglia Ruskin University's law students.
