In 2017, Anglia Ruskin gained Responsible Futures (RF) accreditation for our work to embed sustainability into the curriculum. The accreditation highlighted:

  • the extensive curriculum audit undertaken by the EfS team
  • the University's 'whole institution approach' to sustainability, as evidenced in the creation of our first Sustainability Strategy
  • the inclusion of a sustainability academic regulation, meaning that sustainability will be incorporated into all courses in the next five years.

2018 Responsible Futures progress

As part of the 2018 accreditation, the Education for Sustainability team have been analysing the progress made in the last two years, and comparing this with some of the action points raised as part of the 2017 accreditation.

  1. Student survey - we compared and contrasted findings from the annual 2017 NUS skills survey with results from a survey that was conducted in April 2016. Read the findings
  2. Curriculum audit - we compared and contrasted results from a baseline curriculum audit, conducted in 2016, with evidence of the work we have been doing over the last two years to support individual staff members and Faculties. The study is reflective of our work within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, and highlights the substantial impact that we have had through taking more of a targeted approach.   3. Monitoring sustainability - we actively monitor the progress being made to embed sustainability into the curriculum through the Quality Assurance course approval and re-approval process. The findings from this data have been written up into a report which can be accessed Download the report

2017 Responsible Futures achievements

Anglia Ruskin University has become one of just 13 UK higher education institutions recognised for equipping its students with the knowledge, skills and values to critically challenge the world around them, and tackle social, economic and environmental issues and inequalities.

A team of student auditors awarded Anglia Ruskin the prestigious National Union of Students' Responsible Futures accreditation for its work embedding sustainability and social responsibility across the formal and informal curriculum. This comes just weeks after we were shortlisted for a 2017 Edie Sustainability Leaders Award.

Dr Alison Greig, of Anglia Ruskin’s Global Sustainability Institute, said:

“Anglia Ruskin signed up to Responsible Futures because we recognise the need to develop our students’ knowledge and skills so that they have the capacity to become effective agents for positive change. Achieving this accreditation demonstrates to current and prospective students that a degree from Anglia Ruskin will help them to prosper as responsible global citizens of the 21st century.”

Actions for Responsible Futures

  • Student survey – in April 2016, we conducted a survey of ARU students on their attitudes, expectations and experiences of Education for Sustainability. The findings have been released in a GSI Briefing Note.
  • Baseline audit – to identify where sustainability and social responsibility sits within the curricular, the EfS team conducted a baseline audit of all courses in the Faculty of Science & Engineering; the Faculty of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences; and the Faculty of Business and Law. If you're interested, this can be found in our Annual Report 2015, along with case studies. We've also done a similar study on Anglia Ruskin's nursing and midwifery courses.
