Improving liver disease knowledge and screening in Nigeria: ARU Changemakers

ARU Changemakers is a group of ARU staff, students, and alumni committed to tackling societal challenges through community organising. A dedicated member, Osereimen Akhilele, identified a crucial need in his family’s community in Nigeria: inadequate knowledge and accessible screening for liver disease.

The Daniel Osaremen Akhilele Foundation

Inspired by his father's misdiagnosed liver cirrhosis, Osereimen founded the Daniel Osaremen Akhilele Foundation in his memory. The foundation focuses on improving awareness and early detection of liver diseases.

As co-founder and Project Manager, Osereimen leads efforts to educate the public about liver cirrhosis through:

  • Informative content on social media
  • Radio jingles
  • Free screenings for hepatitis B and C
  • Malaria tests and medication
  • Educational sessions

Impact

The foundation's first clinic screened 100 individuals who otherwise lacked access to diagnostic services.

Understanding the vital role fathers play, the foundation mentors and educates fatherless children in Nigeria. Currently, it sponsors the education of four children, demonstrating a love for people and community.

ARU Changemakers, through initiatives led by members like Osereimen, makes a real difference in communities, enhancing awareness, healthcare, and support. Their work exemplifies the positive impact of community organising.
