Evaluating the Validity, Reliability and Clinical Utility of the Music therapy Sensory Instrument for Cognition, Consciousness and Awareness (MuSICCA)

This study is investigating the validity, reliability and clinical utility of the MuSICCA – the first music-based assessment tool to be validated for diagnosis, goal setting and treatment planning for children aged 2-18 with disorders of consciousness (DOC).

The MuSICCA is adapted from the validated adult tool, the Music therapy Assessment Tool for Awareness in Disorders of Consciousness (MATADOC). These adaptations were informed by reference to the evidence-base and consultation with music therapists, clinical and educational psychologists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, educators, and families of children with DOC.

To date, we have published our protocol, conducted face validity testing and published the findings of this, commenced recruitment and data collection, and enrolled 33 participants.
