Law school academic to also speak at UNCITRAL’s Fiftieth Anniversary congress

On 15-17 March 2017, Lecturer in Law Iyare Otabor-Olubor participated in the Fourth International Colloquium on Secured Transactions Law, organised by the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL).

The Colloquium, which took place at the Vienna International Centre, was organised to discuss possible future work in the field of secured transactions and related areas. Its aim was to further consolidate UNCITRAL’s work in the Model Law on Secured Transactions, which was adopted on 1 July 2016.

The topics discussed related to contractual matters concerning security agreements, financing of micro-business, warehouse receipt financing, assignment of receivables, intellectual property licensing.

Among the participants at the Colloquium were academics, legal practitioners and representatives from national governments, as well as delegates from the International Institute of Private Law (UNIDROIT), National Law Centre for Inter-American Free Trade and the International Finance Corporation of the World Bank Group.

Based on the conclusions of the Colloquium, the Secretariat will prepare a report on possible future work on secured transactions and related topics. This report will be discussed at the upcoming Fiftieth Anniversary Session of UNCITRAL, from 3- 21 July 2017 at the Vienna International Centre.

During this time, Iyare will attend a Congress hosted by UNCITRAL on 4-6 July to speak about the legal framework on equipment financial leasing in sub-Saharan Africa and its impact on sustainable economic development with reference to Nigerian secured transactions laws.

The Congress, titled “Modernizing International Trade Law to Support Innovation and Sustainable Development,” will celebrate UNCITRAL’s Fiftieth Anniversary as well as exploring new directions in cross-border trade.
