Students learn history of English first-hand

On 12 February, 24 of our BA (Hons) English Language and Linguistics students from all year groups travelled to London for a visit to the British Library and Globe theatre, along with lecturers Bettinha Beinhoff and Michelle Sheehan.

The trip allowed the students to learn about the history of the English language, as well as about the two establishments themselves.

On the tour of the library, the students found out about the available resources and saw some very old and important texts. Fascinated by this, they requested more time to look at the library’s treasures after the tour as well.

The tour of the Globe was also very informative, giving a real sense of Shakespeare’s role at the centre of the theatrical scene of the time. Afterwards, the students spent some time in the Globe Exhibition and attended a costume event, where one of our final year students volunteered to be dressed up as Ophelia.

Many of the students provided very positive feedback on the day, and we hope to arrange similar visits in the future.
