ARU hosts its first international Active Learning Conference
On 11/12 September, Anglia Learning & Teaching hosted their first international Active Learning Conference, attended by over 170 delegates from institutions around the world, including Iceland, Norway and Taiwan.
The conference linked Team-Based Learning at University of Bradford, SCALE-UP at Nottingham Trent University and ARU's own active learning practices. The three universities are working together to expand their adoption of active collaborative learning to address barriers to student success as one of the seventeen projects funded by HEFCE’s Catalyst Fund. You can read more about the project on the Vice Chancellor’s blog and the Scaling up active collaborative learning for student success website.
The conference started on 11 September with masterclasses on team-based learning, active learning and SCALE-UP. The next day delegates attended the keynote ‘Designs for active learning’ by Mike Sharples, Professor of Educational Technology, The Open University. There were 13 sessions to choose from, divided into three parallel sessions. A lively Panel Q&A after lunch focused on the impact of learning spaces, building a supportive active learning culture, and how to familiarise students with active learning methods.
Former ALSS postgraduate student, Natalie Eldred and Dr Michelle Fava, ALSS Research Fellow, graphically recorded the conference. They illustrated several sessions as well as the keynote and the Panel Q&A.
Our photographer, Jason Williams also took pictures of the day. Other resources, including videos of the short presentations, will be on the Active Learning Conference page soon.
