You’ll hone your skills in systems design, development, and optimisation by working on a variety of projects and be given the tools to build something on your own from start to finish.
By the end of the course, you’ll be able to design and manufacture products efficiently. You’ll also acquire project management and commercial skills that will make you a well-rounded, engineer career-ready for the engineering industry and beyond.
Our mechatronics engineering degree is designed to make you relevant in today’s fast-paced engineering and industrial world.
As a student at ARU Peterborough, you’ll gain the practical skills and ability to design and build mechatronics systems on your own as well as collaboratively.
The course is project-based and focuses on the use of engineering tool kits and product development from start to finish. You will analyse, develop, and optimise mechatronics systems and build multidisciplinary skills in electronics and mechanical engineering that, ultimately, will prepare you to work in a broad range of sectors.

As a BEng (Hons) Mechatronics Engineering graduate, your skills will be in high demand. With a global shortage of engineers, attracting more people to the profession is paramount, particularly women and people from a variety of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. In the UK alone, it’s estimated that an additional 50,000 engineers a year are needed to respond to 21st-century challenges.
As a mechatronics engineer you could use your technical skills across the fields of mechanical, electrical, electronic, computer and software engineering. You might work with smart technologies, robotic systems, automated systems, and computer aided manufacturing processes and systems.
Other roles could include product and prototype development, testing and installation of equipment, and engineering systems management.
Our free Employability Service will help you take practical steps to follow your chosen career path, secure jobs and work experience, or even start your own business.
Graduation doesn’t need to be the end of your time with us. You might decide to stay at ARU with postgraduate courses on the horizon for ARU Peterborough. You could also study for a Masters such as MSc Engineering Management in Chelmsford.
Informed by employers, our courses support an integrated approach to employability. You’ll have opportunities to develop the skills and abilities they are looking for and gain a deeper understanding of how your academic learning relates to the world of work through Live Briefs and Ruskin Modules.
To amplify your career ambition, you will need to actively dedicate time outside of your studies, whether you choose to explore placements, internships or volunteering. Or you could make a social impact by collaborating with our partner organisations through our volunteer scheme Students at the Heart of Knowledge Exchange (SHoKE). These all give you an edge, providing you with experience that you will be able to evidence on your CV and talk about in interviews.
Our Employability and Careers Service offers a range of expert advice and support to build your unique professional profile, including tailored career appointments, advice on writing your CV, and help to complete job applications. You’ll have 24/7 access to the Careers Centre, our comprehensive online digital resource, which empowers you to start building a Personal Career Development Plan from the very start. Design your future at ARU.
To help you stand out when competing for a job after you graduate, we've developed the ARU Graduate Capitals. This is a set of six attributes, valued by employers and industry, that we integrate into our courses and help you develop, so you’ll have life-long career-skills.
