You'll develop an understanding of the work sector and the role that individuals take in influencing its performance. You'll explore the impact of political, social and economic factors and consider the legal and ethical frameworks informing the sector. You'll also reflect on your current or potential roles and develop self-awareness and reflective ability appropriate to your position in the organisation.
Students entering Higher Education need specific study skills to enable them to maximise their learning potential and take advantage of opportunities - both in the academic setting and workplace. This course is both preparatory and supportive, so if you're thinking about starting any higher education study, we'll provide you with a strong foundation for learning and development.
Valuing People and Fostering Dignity and Respect

An understanding of ethical principles is essential when caring for individuals and fostering dignity and respect. This course will provide an important foundation from which you'll reflect critically upon your own personal values and those of your colleagues. Essential to this course is the understanding of respecting the uniqueness and strengths of individuals and groups who may be socially excluded.
We'll help you develop an understanding of rights, power, and responsibility within the practice of health and social care. It will also equip you with a sound philosophical base on which to think about ethical dilemmas, conflicts, contradictions and tensions. You'll be encouraged to explore how your own attitudes and beliefs can influence client care. The importance of situational factors such as stress and conflict will be explored to show how coping mechanisms utilised in these situations can enhance, or undermine, the dignity and respect shown to colleagues and clients.
Working Collaboratively

This course will enable you to become aware of the importance of Multi-disciplinary and inter-professional team working, operating in a collaborative way and being an
effective member of the team.
We'll provide you with an introduction to relevant collaborative concepts and the opportunity to consider these principles in relation to practice, including inter-professional working, communication skills and prioritising of care. Collaboration with relevant professionals and agencies is emphasised and recognition of the professional role and responsibilities is developed. This course also incorporates the service user and carer perspective and provides the theoretical knowledge to enable you to consider the collaborative process in relation to practice.
Planning and Managing Resources
30 credits, level 4
We'll provide you with a fundamental understanding of the importance of effective resource management in health and social care. Resource management will be explored, with an emphasis on the understanding and use of appropriate theories to explain the ways in which business organisations respond to issues and problems within a health related context.
We'll help you develop a basic knowledge of how quantitative information aids management in resource planning, controlling and decision making. These skills can be used in a variety of contexts within healthcare environments. You'll study various decision making techniques where an organisation is faced with controlling resources and the impact of internal and external factors on resource management and planning will be explored.
Leadership Practice
30 credits, level 5
Effective leadership is essential to providing high quality practice in health and social care settings. Staff morale and motivation, retention and recruitment, professional development, quality improvement, service efficiency and effectiveness - all depend significantly upon the style and quality of leadership at the front line.
We'll empower you to develop the necessary leadership skills to become a facilitator and motivator of change in the workplace. The focus is on contemporary theories of leadership such as transformational, distributive and leaderful practice and the notions which underpin leadership such as personal dispositions, values and skills.
Managing People and Processes
30 credits, level 5
Every manager or team leader has a responsibility for human resource (HR) management; it is not the sole domain of the HR specialist. This course is designed to give you an insight into human resource management functions and issues.
We'll provide you with an introduction to both the theoretical basis for HR Management and the range of activities covered by HR. You'll explore the constituent parts of the HR function and the link between quality of care delivery and HR management strategy, as well as how to apply relevant theories and concepts to the workplace.
