Topics you will cover include hazards, risks, controls, emergency procedures, legislation, industry good practice and felling and processing medium size trees over 380mm up to 760mm.
The module requires reading and interpreting of information such as safety instructions and technical knowledge. To attain this qualification you must successfully achieve a one to one practical assessment with oral questioning by an independent NPTC City & Guilds approved assessor.

Your tutor
Steve Woodley is a forester, arborist and green woodworker from Essex with 28 years industry experience specialising in urban and woodland tree management. Steve has been teaching ground and aerial units for us since 2004. His professional qualifications include BSc (Hons) Rural Resource Development, Arb Association Tech Cert, NPTC assessor since 2004. Steve is also passionate about hand crafted timber and keeping the skill of axing alive.
Along with Steve we use many excellent trainers and assessors and are confident our training more than meets NPTC City & Guilds standards.
Free parking is available on Writtle campus: we'll issue a permit to you and ask that it's clearly displayed in your vehicle.
Candidates are asked to meet at our King’s Lodge Centre before following the instructor to the training site. Please bear in mind we will be working deep within the forest, so bring a packed lunch and any other refreshments.
The Level 3 Certificate of Competence is for individuals who operate chainsaws as part of their work in arboriculture, forestry or other industries and are competent in chainsaw maintenance, cross-cutting, felling and processing trees up to 380mm.

This intensive practical course requires a good level of physical fitness and an ability to study written technical information.
You must hold OFQUAL regulated qualifications in Chainsaw Maintenance and Crosscutting (NPTC) and Felling and Processing Trees up to 380mm (NPTC).
We are governed by Health and Safety Executive (HSE) regulations therefore the correct personal protective equipment (PPE) must be used before you can start the course.
Equipment list for felling over 380mm
- Chainsaw with maximum guide bar 15 inch (insurance requirement, above this length is not acceptable)
- Fuel & oil in approved container(s)
- Filing kit, for sharpening
- Saw tool kit
- Felling lever; if possible
- 3 x high lift wedges
- Sledge hammer
- Timber tongs/hook
- Turning strap
- Measuring aid
- Winch 1.6 ton SWL or greater with appropriate strops (can be provided)
Personal protective equipment
- Hard hat assembly - with ear defenders, mesh visor (or safety glasses conforming to EN166)

- Personal first aid kit/ large wound dressing

All equipment and PPE must conform to relevant CE approvals and be in a serviceable condition.
