Our course combines practice and theory to offer you the most effective learning experience. With the support from your employer, you will be placed in your local AMHP duty team. You will study in university over two semesters, and you will also be able to work two to three days per week in your own team.
You will learn from a variety of professionals, ranging from expert practitioners and service users to law professional trainers and psychiatric staff. You will also be encouraged to visit services, such as Older People wards or Child and Adolescent Mental Health, to gain further experience in clinical practice.
Before starting the course a meeting will be arranged between you and your sponsoring manager and we will put together a learning programme that best suits you and your team. You will be expected to attend a five day pre-AMHP course in July.
Practice placements are a significant part of the course, spread across seven months. You will be supported by a Practice Educator who will manage and oversee your practice experience. You will also shadow practitioners and lead mental health assessments. Placements are arranged through your sponsoring manager, via your own local authority and/or Mental Health Trusts and in conjunction with our university.
Please note that teaching sessions are split between our campus in Cambridge (12 days) and our campus in Peterborough (11 days). Students will also undertake field (placement) learning opportunities within their local authority.

Upon successfully completing this course, you will have met the ‘approval criteria’ (2013) of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). You'll be eligible to apply for AMHP registration through your Local Authority / Mental Health Trust in accordance with the Mental Health (Approved Mental Health Professionals) (Approval) (England) Regulations 2008, enhancing your employment opportunities with these sought-after skills.
We'll assess the skills and knowledge you'll develop in a variety of ways. For example, a written assignment examining themes in mental health legislation or a multiple choice questionnaire exploring law. As part of your placement we'll provide you with a practice document outlining key competencies, which you'll evidence with a portfolio. Your Practice Educator will also produce a report on how you've applied what you've learnt.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, many of our students can choose to study face to face on campus or online only. They're also able to change their mode of delivery on given dates in each trimester.
For on-campus teaching, we offer at least four hours face-to-face teaching related contact time per week for our undergraduate full-time courses, supported by online learning using our established online learning systems. The number of contact hours varies course by course, and you can contact us for further information. The provision offered is subject to change due to the possibility of further Government restrictions, however we remain committed to delivering face-to-face teaching and ensuring a safe and inclusive environment.
In the event that there are further changes to the current restrictions that are in place due to the pandemic, we may need to move some courses online only at short notice to remain in line with Government guidelines and ensure the continued safety of our students and staff.
Whether you're studying entirely online or through a blend of face-to-face and online learning in September 2021, you'll need a computer and reliable internet access to successfully engage with your course.
