Successful completion of this course will give you the potential to advance your career into leadership positions within clinical settings, or in the fields of management, research and teaching. You’ll be equipped with the skills and knowledge to become an innovative, forward-thinking practitioner, with the qualities needed to affect change in healthcare planning, delivery and education.

You’ll also have the opportunity to complete the course with an additional qualification as a Newborn Infant Physical Examination (NIPE) practitioner. Many of our Masters level midwifery students go on to complete professional doctorates.

Core modules

  • Promoting Normal Childbirth
    This module addresses one of the major national and international concerns about childbirth, the rising rate of intervention, and will provide you with the underpinning knowledge and confidence required to modify this situation. You will be encouraged to develop your existing knowledge and skills by exploring the concept of normality and determining how this might be promoted during the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods. Both international and local perspectives will be analysed, enabling you to apply your learning to your particular position whilst deepening your understanding of alternative situations.
  • Facilitating Complex Birth
    This module explores the role of the midwife in supporting women with complex social, emotional, and physical needs. You will be encouraged to explore both direct and indirect causes of maternal death and the role of the midwife in addressing these. You will also be expected to consider wider influences on maternal mortality and morbidity. Strategies for the maintenance of normality within such complex situations will be promoted. You will be supported in applying your learning to your own clinical practice and in developing your skills in caring for women with complex needs.
  • Research Methodology
    With the increased emphasis on research in contemporary healthcare, it’s essential that you are familiar with research methodology. The ability to critically analyse and synthesise research is a necessary skill for all students, to be able to apply research in all areas of specialist interest in the delivery of effective patient care. You’ll revisit existing knowledge of the research process and we’ll assist you in further developing skills of critical analysis and synthesis. You’ll also have the opportunity to critically appraise the ethical dimensions of research studies that seek to develop, improve and advance healthcare services.
  • Major Project
    The Major Project is central to the Masters award and enables you to demonstrate your ability to synthesise learning from previous modules. You will use this learning as the basis for planning, conducting and writing up a research or work-based project. This is the opportunity for you to demonstrate the ability to raise significant and meaningful questions in relation to your chosen topic and a critical understanding of research methods and their relationship to knowledge. You will also be in a position to develop solutions to ethical dilemmas likely to arise in your research or professional practice and to expand existing knowledge to contribute to the development of best practice.

Optional modules (subject to availability)

  • Advanced Non-Medical Prescribing
    This module will prepare nurses, midwives, specialist community public health nurses and pharmacists to prescribe safely and cost effectively as independent and supplementary prescribers. Alongside the holistic assessment skills module, this educational programme will provide the practitioner with key skills to deliver community agendas, providing care close to home. Supervision and assessment from a designated GP or Nurse Practitioner is essential within this module in order to meet the 78 hours clinical practice requirement. It also aims to prepare allied health professionals to prescribe safely, appropriately and cost effectively as supplementary prescribers and provide an opportunity for interprofessional students to debate, analyse and synthesise key issues within safe prescribing practice and its contribution to health care.
  • Applied Leadership & Management
    This module provides an innovative exploration of leadership and management in healthcare, and examines their impact on organisations including wider considerations in the external environment. This module will enable students to assess and analyse the roles that leaders and managers play in a range of organizational contexts; and to apply the principles and techniques of leadership and management in a range of contexts.
  • Care of the Critically Unwell Woman
    This module will enable you to develop in-depth knowledge and skills when caring for the critically unwell woman, during the child bearing continuum. Work-based learning is incorporated into the module in order to recognise and value your professional expertise. While practicing midwifery in an area where women with high dependency needs will be cared for, you will also spend clinical time developing your skills in the high dependency or intensive care unit.
  • Contemporary Issues in Mental Health Care
    Explore current issues in mental health from both a national and global perspective. Together we’ll address a number of issues related to mental health and society. The way in which mental illness is portrayed through the media and the impact this can have on interpretations of mental health and mental illness within a given society will be explored. This includes examining how mental health is represented in the news, on social media and within fictional sources including films and literature. The delivery of culturally appropriate health care will also be examined and how the knowledge gained can be applied to current or future practice.
  • Contemporary UK Healthcare Practice
    As a non-UK healthcare practitioner, you will gain an overview of contemporary healthcare practice in the UK. You will be given an overview of the National Health Service, understanding of the role of medical, nursing and allied health professions in the UK and the professional bodies that regulate them. You will explore legal and ethical concepts such as confidentiality, autonomy and advocacy that underpin UK healthcare practice. You will undertake 100 hours of observational practice visits. No direct or indirect patient care will be undertaken on these visits. These visits will be dependent on your areas of interest and negotiated with the course leader. The assessment for this module is a 15-minute seminar presentation and a 3,000-word written critical reflection. If you choose this module you’ll be required to satisfactorily complete a DBS check and occupational health clearance.
  • Global Impact of Responsive Parenting
    This module is designed to examine the positive health impact responsive parenting has on the mother and infant dyad, the wider family, society and the Globe. Historical child rearing styles will be reviewed and debated to highlight their negative effects on child development and on society. The module will explore the current understanding of neurophysiology of infant brain development and how parenting interactions can affect this process. The module will conclude with positive practical steps for health professionals to encourage responsive parenting with the parents they work with every day.
  • Newborn Infant Physical Examination (NIPE)
    This module will focus on the specialist knowledge and the clinical skills that are required to enable you to competently undertake a thorough Newborn and Infant Physical Examination (NIPE) in clinical practice. You will utilise in-depth knowledge and understanding that you have gained to enable you to recognise the deviations from the normal to initiate appropriate care and referral. Critical reflection and completion of the practice documents will allow you to further identify your learning needs and develop your scope of professional practice.
  • Safeguarding: A Collaborative Approach
    Collaboration is hugely important at all levels and across all settings as it underpins excellent care and the work needed to deliver the vision. This module is designed for a multi-professional audience who come into contact with the children of those from vulnerable groups, particular covering the areas of Substance misuse, Mental Health, Domestic Abuse and Safeguarding; this includes both practitioners and students. In the light of the Francis Report (2013) and others, the rationale of the module is to enhance your critical understanding of these subjects and in particular to understand both the need for and the challenges in providing a collaborative approach to meet clients’ needs. You’ll be required to draw upon your practice experiences to identify and respond appropriately to cases/scenarios related to the core topics as an effective member of the multidisciplinary team. It will equip you with the knowledge to understand what the law says you and others must do or are expected to do and thus encourage good cross-agency working (Working together, 2013).
  • Specialist Techniques for Medical and Healthcare Education
    Develop specialist techniques required for your role in medical and healthcare education. You’ll have the opportunity to explore 5 techniques (of ten offered) that you believe will benefit your practice. You’ll be encouraged to reflect on how you might use these techniques to address identified areas for development in your practice and benefit your students’ learning. Face-to-face delivery will be across five workshops with further complementary resources and activities available online. Distance learners will have further resources and activities online which will be complimented with five webinars. Workshops and webinars may include; mentoring and motivational interviewing, coaching, teaching in the clinical environment, high stakes assessment, OSCE design and development, faculty development in the health professions, leadership in healthcare education, technology enhanced learning, teaching and assessing professionalism and education support and resilience. The assessment takes a patchwork approach, with each workshop having its own assessment and then a final integrative reflection at the end of the module.

You will choose one optional module from the above list. Some modules may not be available through distance learning; modules are subject to change.


Assessment methods vary between modules and include written essays, seminar presentations with supporting papers, a research proposal and, for the Masters award, a major project of no more than 15,000 words.

All the assessment methods are designed to demonstrate the range of knowledge and skills expected of a practitioner working at an advanced level.

You must hold an appropriate midwifery qualification and have a minimum of one year’s post-qualification experience of working as a midwife. An Honours degree qualification is also usually required.
