Developing the midwives of the future

Designed with employers, our full-time Midwife degree apprenticeship balances theory with practical, real-time learning in the workplace. Apprentices develop the core skills, knowledge and occupational behaviours to achieve a high level of proficiency and become the lead health professional for the women and birthing people in their care.

Who is this apprenticeship for?

This apprenticeship has been designed with employers to meet the apprenticeship standard and the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements to be able to develop your own midwives who will, when qualified, be the lead health professional for the woman or birthing person in their care, providing evidence-based information and supporting them to make informed choices about the options and services available.

Upon successful completion of the BSc (Hons) Midwifery, they will be able to register with the NMC as a Midwife.

This apprenticeship is for existing or new staff who work on a maternity ward as a Maternity Support Worker/Healthcare Assistant. Working for a Level 6 full-time qualification is a big commitment for the apprentice and for you as the employer. The applicants will need to be motivated, well organised, determined and willing to learn.

Please note that as this is a full-time apprenticeship, all 37.5 hours of the apprentice's contracted working hours will be going to the apprenticeship for three years.

Capabilities to better your business

A cost-effective way to develop and retain talent

Degree apprenticeships are a smart investment. You can reinvest Apprenticeship Levy funds to cover the cost of the apprenticeship, or receive funding support from the government.

If you operate in England and your annual payroll is over £3 million, you pay a levy of 0.5% of your payroll into a levy account.

The cost of the Midwife degree apprenticeship programme for levy paying employers is £26,000 and this can be covered in full using the non-refundable funds in your levy account. If you exhaust the funds in your levy account, then the government will pay 95% of the outstanding fees and you will need to pay the remaining 5%.

If your organisation is not required to pay the levy, you will pay only 5% of the cost of the apprenticeship programme while the government pays the remaining 95%. The cost of the Midwifery programme for non-levy paying employers is just £1,300.

For more about the Apprenticeship Levy, and to find out about any additional incentive payments for hiring a new apprentice from the government, please visit the key information section on our Degree apprenticeships for employers page.

Delivered by experts, blending online and face-to-face learning

The course is delivered in a flexible blend of face-to-face and online theory classes, directed learning activities and practice placements across three of our campuses, Chelmsford, Cambridge and ARU Peterborough.

Our online learning management system (LMS) – Canvas – offers a range of learning methods that include tutor-led online group discussions, review of case studies, and reflective activities. Your apprentices will develop skills such as critical thinking, decision making, communication, team working, leadership, problem solving, teaching and clinical skills for safe and effective practice. Reflective activities are used to encourage the apprentices to bring issues from the workplace setting to the online forums for discussion with their peers.

The apprentices will acquire the knowledge and skills to support the wider team in providing quality care, as well as transferrable skills and professional values required within the role to ensure that the safety of the public remains paramount. We offer a range of guest lecturers who contribute to the learning including registered practitioners from health care settings.

What are the entry requirements?

As an employer your authority sets out the person specifications for the role, but the apprentice will need to meet our entry requirements to be accepted onto the course. You can view the full entry requirements on our apprentice course page.
