We're an Approved Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Centre, offering RHS qualifications which are widely recognised and respected in the horticulture industry.
We’re one of the leading land-based institutions in the UK, based on 150-hectare campus with temperature-controlled glasshouse, gardens and a large collection of trees and plants.
As a student at Writtle College, you’ll gain experience of planting, growing and caring for plants, shrubs and trees – including fruits and vegetables.
You’ll also learn about garden design and history, landscape construction, plant and soil science, plant production and identification, and estate management.
This extended diploma offers a range of optional study units in Year 2, and is ideal if you want to explore specific areas of horticulture.

Hands-on learning
As a horticulture student at Writtle College you'll:
- use our temperature-controlled glasshouse, gardens and large collection of plants across campus
- develop essential skills in tractor driving and operating estate machinery
- take part in projects at local schools and businesses such as maintaining, planting and designing gardens
- go on field trips to gardens such as RHS Wisley, RHS Hyde Hall and Cambridge Botanical Gardens.
