Nicholas graduated in 1994 with a degree in Graphic Arts and Illustration and has been a practicing graphic designer ever since. Previously he has taught at the University of Bedfordshire, the University of Northampton, Milan's Accademia di Comunicazione and Ankara's Baskent University, as well as helping to develop D&AD's Student Awards briefs and serving on its jury.
He continues to make graphic design in parallel with teaching commitments. In the past he's worked with Frank PR, Saatchi & Saatchi, The London Community Foundation, The Henry Moore Foundation, Hatfield House, Atelier Xavier Veilhan, The NUS, and the UK Film Council, and, most recently and extensively, The Public Domain Review, where he is associate editor.
Since 2010 his interests have turned towards works of the imagination. This led first to an MA in Applied Imagination at Central St. Martins in 2011, and was followed soon after by an appointment in Amman, Jordan, delivering a week-long series of lectures and workshops entitled ‘Imagined Worlds in Text and Image’.
More recently he has designed and led a collaborative project between students at Cambridge School of Art and Universidad Torcuato di Tella in Buenos Aires, giving new visual form to the creatures in Jorge Luis Borges’ Book of Imaginary Beings.
Recent projects include a book of sketch stories entitled At the Flea Market, and the Visions of Lucian series (all self-published via Mulita Small Editions); and Affinities, a crowd-funded visual poem and resource book from The Public Domain Review.
He is also an editor at Ruskin Arts Publications, with recent projects including Ways of Thinking and Auguries of Innocence: First Experiences with Letterpress.
