Senior Lecturer

Kate is Course Director for our BA (Hons) Illustration degree. She is an award-winning author and illustrator creating non-fiction children’s books published by Penguin Random House in the UK and commonwealth territories. She is a feature author in Penguins new ‘Puffin Studio’, a new picture-book list “created to champion standout creative voices with strong international appeal”. Her books are also published in the US, China and Japan. As an animation director she worked with a range of commercial clients from Nokia and Nike, to MTV and Sigur Ros.

Background

Kate studied Fine Art BA (Hons) at the Slade School of Fine Art in London and went on to work as a stop-frame animator for 15 years, working under the pseudonym DuckEye creating commercials and music videos for a range of high profile clients.

Kate completed her MA Children's Book Illustration in 2019, winning the Cambridge School of Art Ronald Searle prize for creativity and highly commended in the V&A Student Illustrator of the year 2020.

Her work has been published by a range of publishers. Her debut book The Fossil Hunter, published by Penguin Random House in 2023, won the Klaus Flugge Prize 2024. Her second book The Cave Explorer, published by PRH in 2025, was highly commended by the Wainwright Nature Prize 2026 and won the PETERs prize for non-fiction, voted for by librarians and teachers. Her next book The Butterfly Painter will be published in 2027.
