Dr Ankur Thapar

Ankur is an academic vascular and endovascular surgeon with a joint appointment between the Centre for Circulatory Health and MSE NHS Foundation Trust.  In this role he leads the academic vascular programme, responsible for training and developing academic nurses, FYs, CTs and STRs.

Background

Ankur graduated with Distinction from Imperial College in 2004 in Medicine and took time out of run-through surgical training to complete his PhD as a Royal College of Surgeons Research Fellow in 2012 in carotid atherosclerotic stroke and won the 2012 European Young Investigator Prize at EFSUMB and the London Surgical Symposium 1st Prize. His clinical fellowship was in endovascular surgery in Flinders Medical Centre, Adelaide in 2019.

In 2020 he was appointed as a substantive consultant at Mid and South Essex Hospitals and a senior research fellow in the Centre for Circulatory Health.  In 2021 he won the Gold Medal for the European Society for Vascular Surgery exam.

Ankur now trains surgeons in novel open and endovascular techniques.

His last academic trainees have achieved national training numbers in surgery and radiology.

Previous research students have won the James Purdie SVN research prize, Dragon’s Den at the VSGBI meeting, Norman Williams Prize at SARS, Conrad Lewin Prize at BACA, and have been cited in the SVS carotid and AHA Stroke guidelines and published the inaugural paper in the journal Stroke history series.
