Youngsters from Essex schools went head-to-head with visiting pupils from China in a rocket car race at Anglia Ruskin University.

12 schools from Essex built and raced model cars, fired along Anglia Ruskin’s Chelmsford campus by fireworks, as part of the “Bloodhound Car Challenge”. They were joined by visitors from Jiangsu province, who had also visited Anglia Ruskin’s campus and toured the state-of-the-art facilities earlier in the day.

The race was organised by Essex County Council as part of a series of events with their partners in Jiangsu. Members of the world-record attempting Bloodhound SSC team were also on hand to help pupils with designing and racing their cars.

Marc Rothera, Senior Outreach Officer at Anglia Ruskin University, said:

“We were delighted to work with Essex County Council and host these events on our campus.

“The pupils who took part from Essex and China really enjoyed themselves. It was an event with a truly international flavour and I’m pleased to say the rocket car racing went with a bang.”
