Kate Milner to reveal story behind My Name Is Not Refugee in online talk

Illustrator and Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) graduate Kate Milner will discuss her award-winning picture book, My Name Is Not Refugee, during a free online talk as ARU marks Refugee Week (15-21 June).

In 2016, illustrations from the book – which started off as her Masters project for the MA Children’s Book Illustration course – won the V&A Student Illustration Award, and the book went on to win the Klaus Flugge prize in 2018.

Kate has subsequently published a sequel called It’s a No Money Day, about poverty and the use of food banks.

During the talk, Kate will discuss how the negative depiction of refugees in the mainstream media made her decide to create the book, which helps children to understand this difficult subject.

Miriam Berg, Public Engagement Officer for ARU, said:

“Kate Milner’s My Name Is Not Refugee is a wonderful book that succeeds in explaining a difficult but extremely important subject.

“We are extremely proud of her success and are looking forward to welcoming her back to ARU, albeit digitally, for this talk. It promises to be a fascinating event.”

The talk will take place online on Wednesday, 17 June from 6pm until 7pm. It is free to join, but places must be booked at www.aru.ac.uk/community-events
