Essex teenagers complete National Citizen Service programme

Over 700 youngsters from across Essex celebrated at Anglia Ruskin University this week, as they graduated from Essex Boys and Girls Clubs’ National Citizen Service (NCS) programme.

The programme is run for 15 to 17-year-olds and consists of two weeks away from home; the first, a week full of outdoor activities and pursuits, whilst the second week focuses on developing life skills through workshops and activities. Finally the youngsters get the chance to develop a community project to raise awareness for a local charity or good cause.

Having completed the course, the participants from Basildon, Epping, Harlow, Chelmsford and Southend graduated at a ceremony at Anglia Ruskin, attended by MP for Chelmsford, Vicky Ford, and MP for Southend West, Sir David Amess.

The participants had already spent time at Anglia Ruskin over the summer working with the university’s Outreach team on improving their confidence and developing skills to pep up their CVs and UCAS personal statements.

Paul Dunton, Outreach Officer for Anglia Ruskin University, said:

“We have enjoyed working with the enthusiastic members of the Essex Boys and Girls Clubs over the course of the summer and it has been a privilege to host their graduation from the NCS programme.

“This experience provides so much to them and also helps them prepare for the important steps they will all be taking in the coming years.”

Jamie Townsend, of the Essex Boys and Girls Clubs, said:

“This summer’s NCS programme has been our best yet! It’s been a pleasure to see all of the participants grow in confidence and we really hope they use the skills and experiences in the next stage of their lives.

“It has been great working with Anglia Ruskin University throughout the summer, and we can’t thank them enough for allowing us use of their fantastic facilities for our graduation ceremony.”
