Events showcase research taking place within School of Psychology and Sports Science

A series of talks to mark the launch of Anglia Ruskin University’s new School of Psychology and Sports Science will take place on the Cambridge campus this autumn.

The free Mind/Body Matters events are all presented by Anglia Ruskin academics and are open to the public, as well as staff and students, and no booking is necessary.

The series kicks off in Anglia Ruskin’s new Science Centre on Wednesday, 10 October (1pm) with Dr Lewis Goodings asking “Is self-tracking the secret to better living?”

Dr Goodings, Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Anglia Ruskin, will look at new technologies allowing us to track both our physical activity and our psychological well-being, explore the implications and ask whether more information shapes our experiences.

Future talks this autumn will see Dr Alex Clarke investigate “How does the brain make sense of the world?” (Wednesday, 24 October, 1pm) and Dr Francesca Cavallerio look at the “no pain, no gain” mentality in sport, and discuss whether pain does affect athletes’ mental and physical health (Wednesday, 7 November, 1pm).

And on Wednesday, 21 November (1pm), Developmental Psychologist Dr Sarah Kuppen will discuss if “breast is always best”, and whether the pressure to breastfeed is backed up by science.

The organiser of the series Viren Swami, Professor of Social Psychology at Anglia Ruskin, said:

“We have put together what we hope will be a fascinating and thought-provoking series of events that touch on questions of importance for society.

“We’re delighted to be able to welcome members of the public to these events, which will take place in our new Science Centre, and we hope they will introduce the community to some of the research we do at Anglia Ruskin University.”
