Alumni make final of Book Illustration Competition run by The Folio Society and House of Illustration
Five Anglia Ruskin University graduates have thrown themselves into the world of bonnets and breeches to reach the final of the 2017 Book Illustration Competition, which is a partnership between The Folio Society and House of Illustration.
BA (Hons) Illustration graduates Julia Konieczna and Kathrin Lang are joined on the 23-person longlist by MA Children’s Book Illustration graduates Rachael Lovatt, Anna Severynovska and Wen Dee Tan, thanks to their illustrations based on the novel Mansfield Park.
All 23 finalists will have their work displayed at the House of Illustration in King’s Cross, London, from 11 February until 12 March, with the overall winner receiving a £5,000 commission from The Folio Society to illustrate their new edition of the Jane Austen classic.
And for the first time this year, the competition includes an additional Visitors’ Choice award with the public able to vote online or in person at the House of Illustration exhibition.
Chris Owen, Head of Anglia Ruskin’s Cambridge School of Art, said:
“We are delighted to see our illustration alumni so well represented in this prestigious competition.
“Illustration has a long and distinguished history at Cambridge School of Art, and it is wonderful to see such talented artists emerging not only from our well known MA Children’s Book Illustration course, but also from the BA (Hons) Illustration course.”
The voting for the Visitors’ Choice award ends at midnight on 22 February, with the winners announced at an event at the House of Illustration on 23 February. The awards will be presented by historian and Jane Austen expert Lucy Worsley, who is also on the judging panel. View some examples of the longlisted artists' work on the Guardian website.
