First medical places to new facility in 12 years

Government awards 100 student places to Anglia Ruskin’s new School of Medicine

The Government has today confirmed that Anglia Ruskin University’s new School of Medicine will receive 100 publicly-funded student places – the first time in 12 years that publicly-funded places have gone to new medical schools.

The new £20million School of Medicine, currently being built on the Chelmsford campus, is the first in Essex and allows Anglia Ruskin University the opportunity to educate the future generations of doctors within the county.

The building, which is nearing completion, will feature state-of-the-art skills facilities, specialist teaching space, a lecture theatre and an anatomy suite.

Anglia Ruskin is collaborating with five NHS hospitals, a large mental health trust and more than 60 GP surgeries to provide students with a range of clinical experience in urban and rural environments. Students will be taught by visiting clinicians from NHS Trusts and general practice as well as faculty staff.

The School of Medicine will be underpinned by the world-leading, clinically-focused research already being carried out within Anglia Ruskin’s Faculty of Medical Science. The university also aspires to offer a proportion of places to students from Essex and the wider East of England region.

Professor Iain Martin, Vice Chancellor of Anglia Ruskin University, said:

"We are delighted to have been awarded the places that will enable us to start our medical programme on our campus in Chelmsford.

“This project has, from its inception, been a partnership between our university, health care providers and the wider community and it is fantastic to see this recognised in this announcement. The School of Medicine will be part of our ongoing support for educating a high-quality health workforce that will serve Essex and the wider region.

“We are aware of the challenges we face as a society that an ageing population brings. Educating the future generations of doctors is of great importance and we at Anglia Ruskin are delighted to be a part of that."

Applications are now open for students wishing to study Medicine at Anglia Ruskin University.
