Courses ranked No 1 in UK in new Guardian University Guide league table

Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) has been named as the UK’s leading university for Sports Science and Education courses in the 2021 Guardian league table.

The annual Guardian University Guide ranks ARU top of the 78 UK institutions offering Sports Science courses, with the University of Nottingham second and Loughborough University third, while ARU is placed first out of the 80 UK universities offering courses in the field of Education, with UWE Bristol and Kingston University London completing the top three.

Overall, ARU is placed 80th out of 121 UK universities, and this follows the strong showing in last week’s Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, which placed ARU 38th in the UK and in the top 350 universities worldwide.

The Guardian University Guide rankings are calculated using a range of data and ARU is ranked 18th for “Value added”, which measures how well we support our students, regardless of background, towards achieving their potential.

ARU also achieved a rise of 39 places in the “Career after 15 months” category, which looks at the proportion of graduates in professional jobs or further study. This builds on the Graduate Outcomes Survey results, released by HESA in June, which placed ARU fifth of all mainstream universities in the country for the proportion of graduates in employment or further study 15 months after graduation.

Professor Roderick Watkins, Vice Chancellor of ARU, said:

“We can be justifiably proud of our position in the 2021 Guardian University Guide league table, not least because it highlights the clear difference we are making to the lives of our students.

“ARU prides itself on being an inclusive university, focusing on widening participation and helping everyone achieve their potential. Our ‘Value added’ score shows that we are achieving tangible success in this area.

“We are also delighted that the hard work and commitment shown by colleagues in Sports Science and Education has been highlighted, with their courses leading their UK subject rankings. This national recognition is a remarkable achievement.”
