Professor Aled Jones

Professor Jones to chair the final day at Climate Exp0, sponsored by COP26

Professor Aled Jones of Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) will lead the climate finance discussions at Climate Exp0, a week-long science and policy conference taking place six months before the start of the 2021 UN Climate Change Summit (COP26) in Glasgow.

Bringing together the latest research and policy proposals, and addressing a separate theme each day, Climate Exp0 will cover Green Recovery; Nature-based Solutions; Mitigation Solutions; Adaptation and Resilience; and Finance and Regulation, which will be chaired by Professor Jones on Friday, 21 May.

Professor Jones, Director of ARU’s Global Sustainability Institute, believes that investment in climate solutions is vital in order to meet any climate targets that are agreed at COP26 in November.

Professor Jones said:

“Climate finance is a key component of any agreement that will come out of COP26. Indeed, while setting medium or long-term targets raises the ambition, the only thing that will make meeting those targets possible is a significant and sustained increase in investment into climate solutions.

“The finance day at Climate Exp0 will have two panel sessions of senior policy and business stakeholders to explore the twin challenges or finance risk and finance opportunities within the context of tackling climate change.

“While risk from the physical impacts of climate change become clearer every day, we increasingly need to understand both the risk that transitioning to net zero will bring as well as how to unlock the opportunities inherent in the massive investment change.”

Climate Exp0 is being organised by the COP26 Universities Network and the Italian University Network for Sustainable Development (RUS), and is sponsored by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), Cambridge University Press and the 2021 UN Climate Change Summit (COP26).

Featuring over 200 international speakers and contributors, Climate Exp0 runs from 17-21 May and is part of the All4Climate Italy 2021 official pre-COP26 initiatives.  Italy is the joint president of COP26, alongside the UK.
